Dell Introduces XPS 15

Though Dell has revealed its XPS 14 Ultrabook 
We are soon going to see XPS 15 in Indian markets


It will be much thinner and faster as compared to the old XPS series laptops
The new XPS Series will follow Intel Third Generation Processors.


For starters, every variant of the XPS 15 lineup will have a 1080p display running off the NVIDIA GeForce GT630M chip (1GB on the base model, GT 640M - 2GB on the top end).


The RAM on the XPS 15 can be stepped up from 6GB to 8GB and if you’re planning on maxing things out, then there’s even a 16GB option for you. Sadly, there is no option to swap out the 500 or 750GB hard drives for SSDs. There are four flavors of the XPS 15 to choose from (non-configurable, but each offering something better than the previous one).

The base model will be costing aroud $1299 which will go up to $1999

WD completes Hitachi deal and is now world's largest HDD manufacturer

Western Digital (WD) have confirmed that they have completed all the procedures, and have finally acquired Hitachi. This acquisition has put WD at the top spot as the largest manufacturer of HDDs in the world, reports Verge. Although Hitachi wasn’t the first choice, as WD intended buying Seagate. The WD-Seagate deal maybe didn’t work out for good. The new merger is complete and inked in a deal worth $3.9 billion in cash and $25 million worth of shares, which were reportedly valued at 0.9 billion, early this week. The deal is also said to be funded by a $2.5 billion five year loan.


Reportedly, this move by Hitachi has brought it 10 percent stake in WD and the ability to appoint two members to the board of directors. Moreover, Hitachi has been struggling with the business for sometime now. For WD, it has enabled it to surpass Seagate, its competitor and take the first place in HDD manufacturing in the world. After this merger, WD stocks have risen by 16 per cent to surpass Seagate. Besides, the company has also been fighting out other players who’ve entered the digital market. 

The hard drive market hasn’t been at its best lately, with rising prices, due to the recent Thailand floods, which almost wiped out several factories. But manufacturers have been trying to put their best foot forward, despite all odds. We saw Hitachi released what it called the world’s slimmest hard drive, last month, which is a 2.5-inch notebook hard drive dubbed Travelstar Z7K500. However, there is no word on it making to the Indian store shelves. We also saw Hitachi Global Storage Technologies declare the Ultrastar enterprise-class solid state drive the industry’s first to use 25-nanometer (nm) single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash.

This new WD and Hitachi merger may just work for best interests of both companies.

VLC 2.0 'Twoflower' Released

VideoLAN organisation has released the latest version of VLC media player, VLC 2.0. Apart from UI changes, the new version of the media player brings fixes for several hundred bugs, and has many other new features, including improved decoding support with a new rendering pipeline for different hardware, such as multi-core processors, mobile chipsets, and dedicated GPUs.

VLC 2.0, known as Twoflower, also brings support for a wide range of file formats, including experimental Blu-ray disc playback (full support expected soon). Other new features include a completely re-worked interfaces for the Mac and web platforms, Mac extensions support, improved Mac OS X 10.7 Lion integration, higher quality subtitles, new video filters, new resamplers for higher quality audio, new dynamic range compressor and karaoke filters, faster audio processing, as well as new video and audio outputs for Windows 7, Android, iOS and OS/2.

Professional users will be happy to know VLS 2.0 will feature support for ProRes 422 and 4444, AVC/Intra, Jpeg-2000 and DNxHD/VC-3 in 10bits, EBU subtitles (stl) and EIA-608, SDI and HD-SDI cards for Linux input, as well as faster Dirac/VC-2 encoders.

Developer features include updated LGPLv2.1+ for libVLC, libVLCcore and libcompat, new JSON requests on the web interface to control running VLC instances, and implementation of the MPRIS2 interface to control media players. VLC's web plugins have also been rewritten for better integration and stability in all browsers.

iPhone 5
This celebrated device is expected to come sometime this year. Whether it’s named iPhone 5 or not, the next generation of the iPhone is expected to release later this year in fall, the same time the iPhone 4S was released in 2011. The device is suggested to come in a tapering design, while some supposed design elements were revealed recently. Besides, we obviously expect some improvements over its key feature – Siri. So, if you're boggled over buying an iPhone 4S, especially owing to the hefty price that comes with unjustifiable upgrades (at least the price tag it attaches in India says so), we suggest you might as well wait for the newer version.

Seagate acquires select elements of Samsung's HDD business

Seagate Technology, one of the top hard drive manufacturers in the world, announced yesterday it had acquired select elements of Samsung’s HDD business, for a sum of $1.4 billion.

Steve Luczo, Seagate CEO, said:

"Together, Seagate and Samsung have aligned our current and future product development efforts and roadmaps in order to accelerate time-to-market efficiency for new products and position us to better address the increasing demands for storage. It is an exciting time in the industry with rapidly evolving opportunities in many markets including mobile computing, cloud computing, and solid state storage."

Oh-Hyun Kwon, vice chairman of Device Solutions of Samsung Electronics, added:

"The strategic relationship will open new opportunities for the two companies by mutually complementing each other's creative technology solutions for a broad diversity of IT applications."

Google Currents: A new magazine reading appplication

Google has announced a Magazine reading application called Google Currents.
Google Currents allows users to read magazines, newspapers, and other content on their Android and iOS devices. Google says it has worked with more than 150 publishing partners for “Google Currents”, which has also been integrated with the Google+ social networking site.

“We strive to give you beautiful and simple ways to experience all the content the web has to offer, such as sharing photos on Google+, watching YouTube videos and discovering books, movies and music from Android Market,” says Google in a blog post. “Today we’re expanding our content offering with the introduction of Google Currents, a new application for Android devices, iPads and iPhones that lets you explore online magazines and other content with the swipe of a finger.”

Google Currents, previously dubbed as Propeller, is presently available for Android Market and the Apple App Store for the U.S. users, and is expected to be rolled out in other countries very soon. To get started with the new Google Currents, users just need to download the application and choose the magazine/newspaper they want to subscriptions to for free

Windows Store gets previewed, ahead of February launch

Microsoft’s VP of Windows Web Services, Antoine LeBlond has announced a late February opening of the Windows Store on Windows 8 Beta, and encouraged developers to start creating Metro style apps and other software for it, during the Windows Store Preview that also described its features, app polices and business terms.

According to Microsoft, the Windows Store was designed with an emphasis on discoverability and reach.

Facebook fixes bug that allowed access to private pictures

Finally facebook has fixed the bug that allowed users to see private pictures of other people.

According to reports, the bug was first spotted by the reader forums for BodyBuilding.com. The discussion was reportedly removed from the website later, however, users were found commenting about the glitch in other comment threads.

Facebook was quick to respond to the bug and issued a statement soon after it was highlighted.

India set to have the highest number of Facebook users

Facebook expects India will soon surpass the US and Indonesia to become its largest market in terms of users.

"India is our third largest market in terms of number of users and what we're excited about and why we're here is because some time in the future, we think that India will pass first Indonesia, which should happen soon, and then US," says Facebook's vice president for mobile partnerships and corporate development Vaughan Smith.

India has nearly 30 million Facebook users, while Indonesia has more than 45 million users. According to reports, more than three-fourth of all Facebook users are outside the US. The figures released by ComScore in June revealed that the number of Facebook users in India was growing at a phenomenal pace. According to the data, one out of three Internet users in India was a Facebook user.

Moreover, the Indian companies from various sectors including retail and hospitality are harnessing Facebook to reach out to their audience and promote their businesses. Smith highlights that more than half of Facebook users in India access the social network via their mobile devices.

With number of Internet users in India expected to touch 121 million by year end, Facebook's prospects look better in the country. According to the annual I-Cube report jointly published by IMRB and the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IMAI), India is likely to surpass the US, which has some 245 million Internet users, within two years.

TRAI raises SMS limit to 200 per day per SIM

After drawing flak from all corners, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reportedly decided to raise the limit of 100 SMS per day per SIM to 200 SMS per day per SIM. The new cap comes into effect from today. The monthly limit of sending SMS has also been raised from 3,000 to 6,000 per month.

It may be recalled that the TRAI had restricted the number of SMS to 100 per day per SIM. The regulatory body then said the move would help prevent pesky promotional calls and text messages. TRAI's restriction move, however, came under heavy criticism."The authority has received representations from some of the service providers and consumers to increase the limit of 100 SMS per day per SIM. The authority has considered these representations and decided to increase the limit of 100 SMS per day per SIM to 200 SMS per day per SIM," reports quote the TRAI as saying. The regulatory body also said that it had received a number of requests from the service and telecom operators to increase the limit of SMS.

The TRAI gave its subscribers the option to choose “Fully Blocked” category and “Partial Blocked” category, under which subscribers are allowed to receive SMS from certain categories. It also launched National Customer Preference Registry, previously known as "National Do Not Call Registry".
